Chrisette Michele Top 10

One of my favorite Soul/R&B singers is Grammy Award winner Chrisette Michele. Her sound is not one from this era. To me, that is the best thing about her music. She says that Sarah Vaughan is one of her biggest influences and you can hear it in her songs.

I’m still upset with myself because I missed her April performance in Baton Rouge. Any show with heron the marquee should be good with the addition of R. Kelly. Be sure to see them in a city near you.

Some that didn’t make the countdown:

If It’s Love

Aston Martin Music

Playin’ Our Song

What You Do

Let’s flow into the Top 10

Kelly Clarkson Top 10

It is very possible that Kelly Clarkson is my favorite American Idol winner. Every song she puts out is some type of inspiring anthem. When working out I happen to get a little more energy when one of her songs get shuffled in. I will also always have a special connection to one of Clarkson’s songs. “A Moment Like This” was my high school class song.

These are a couple of new hits that are from her new album, “Piece By Piece”.

Some that didn’t make the Top 10:

Don’t Rush

Little Big Town Top 10

Oh, Little Big Town, how I love the harmonies that you all create. The way that their four voices blend together is magical. Pain Killer, their most recent album is by far their best. It’s their most adult album to date and two great singles, “Day Drinking” and “Girl Crush”, have headlined it.

Here they are performing “Girl Crush” at The Grand Ole Opry.

LBT has done a phenomenal job of staying competitive in a very tight space. There are so many other talented groups out there. Lady Antebellum, Zac Brown Band, Rascal Flatts, and The Band Perry are all incredible in their own special ways, but Little Big Town happens to stick out.

The song “Pontoon” still seems to be not only a summer hit but one year around. Before I knew it I was jamming to a song about a boat, and I must say I still enjoy it to this day.

I hope to see the newest Grand Ole Opry members sometime soon. Hopefully, it’ll be the next time they come to New Orleans or Baton Rouge for the Bayou Country Superfest.

Let’s head to a “Little White Church” and check out the top 10 Little Big Town songs:

10. Your Side of the Bed

9. Deep River Woman

8. Sober

7. Little White Church

6. Tornado

Let’s go motorboatin’ to the top 5.

Jill Scott Top 10 Countdown and New Music

When we think of Women’s History Month we should be think of the strength that all women personify. I must say that Jill Scott is one hell of an example. The way that she writes a love song is comparable to no one else. Her songs take you on a ride that frankly you don’t want to get off of. Don’t believe me check out her VH1 Storytellers special.

She has recently put out new music and an anticipated album is sure to follow. The video for her new single, “You Don’t Know” is below.

She is a mother, singer, writer, actress, poet, and above all she is a poster child for Women’s History Month.

Some songs that did not make the top 10:

My Love

Lovely Day

Shame

Hear My Call

Crown Royal

Sometimes I Wonder

The Fact Is (I Need You)

Black History Month Presents: Anita Baker Top 10

You know, since I have been doing top 10 countdown I have been covering artists that have a signature hit song, but Anita Baker has hits that to me are all so equal.

Maybe it’s because of lovely deep voice or maybe it is in the way she makes her music so personal. The eight-time Grammy winner Baker has gone on to influence other greats that we have come to love like Mary J. Blige.

Black History Month Presents: Lionel Richie & Commodores Top 10

Anyone who knows me knows that my favorite singer/performer of all-time is Lionel Richie. His music is timeless and incomparable. As a performer Richie doesn’t need dancers and all of the lights. All he needs is that voice and a piano.

As a young man, the world was introduced to Lionel Richie when he was the lead singer of the Commodores and in the early 80’s he decided to go solo and create many more hits.

Lionel’s music is so well liked, he decided to “countrify” his hits and made some of them better on the Tuskegee album. On the album, Richie teamed up with a few of country’s best artists and remade 13 of his and the Commodores’ hits.

Typically, I do a top 10 countdown and leave it at that, but because there are so many hits I have decided to do a top 10 for both The Commodores and Lionel Richie.

A few that didn’t make either list:

Ballerina Girl

Truly

Just For You

I Call It Love

Super Bowl Halftime Performer Katy Perry Top 10

This week’s top 10 features the Super Bowl XLIX halftime performer, Katy Perry.

Perry joins Bruno Mars, The Who, Prince, Beyoncé, Madonna, U2, Paul McCartney, Janet Jackson, and many other previous headlining acts.

As of now we know that only Lenny Kravitz will be performing alongside the Grammy-winner.

Every Friday on the Breakfast Club, a weekday syndicated radio show on Power 105.1 out of New York, DJ Envy and Charlamagne Tha God perform a karaoke version of Perry’s “Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F)”. It’s a man jam that we can all sing and belt out, regardless of gender.

The Super Bowl will be on NBC in University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, AZ on February 1.

Kirk Franklin Top 10

Kirk Franklin has been continuously putting out records that have inspired and motivated people of faith and even non-believers. In addition, he has had more choirs than I can name which keeps his sound ever changing. Tamela Mann, David Mann, Myron Butler, Isaac Carree, and others have all done backup roles for Franklin before having their solo success. From Dove Awards, to Grammy Awards, and Stellar Awards, Kirk Franklin has already become a legend in the gospel music genre and as a crossover artist. Not bad for someone who can’t carry a tune. The reason I like his music so much is because it is always modern. For example, he took classics like “Why We Sing” and “Something About The Name Jesus” and made them new while respecting their historical significance.

First, a few that did not make the countdown.

Give Me

Hide Me

Silver & Gold

A God Like You

He Reigns/Awesome God

 Something About The Name Jesus

  1. Hosanna

  1. Declaration (This Is It)

  1. Melodies From Heaven

  1. Lean On Me

  1. Brighter Day

Rascal Flatts Top 10

One thing Rascal Flatts is not is a boy band so don’t compare them to *NSYNC or the Backstreet Boys. The trio of Joe Don, Jay, and Gary sold over 22.5 million album and more than 28 million digital downloads. They’ve had 15 #1 singles, which led to their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a membership into the Grand Ole Opry. Gary LeVox, lead singer, has a voice that is completely unique. This is one of my favorite groups because their music is soulful and quite meaningful.

I must admit I enjoy being a Flatthead.

Please enjoy the Top 10 song made by Rascal Flatts.

10. Rewind

9. Banjo

8. Dancing on the Ceiling with Lionel Richie

7. Fast Cars and Freedom

6. Easy Featuring Natasha Bedingfield

Pink Top 10 Countdown

Quick, name someone who does not like Pink’s music. Her music pulls some sort of emotion out of a listener. Her music is down to earth like we imagine her to be. Her music is uplifting and it brings out your inner rebel. (She would have been a huge country star.) She can also sing upside down on a trapeze. A lot of artists can’t sing standing up.

Pink made it well known when she first debuted on the scene that she was not Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, or Jessica Simpson. She is honest in her music and that may what I and many others like P!NK.

Those that didn’t make the countdown:

True Love

U + Ur Hand

There You Go

Blow Me (One Last Kiss)

Please Don’t Leave Me

10. Who Knew

9. Get This Party Started

8. Sober

7. Raise Your Glass

6. F****** Perfect

Young Veteran Series Presents: Kanye West Top 10

Yes, Mr. West is in the building. For a decade, Kanye has made a strong argument for being named the best rapper alive. The Chicago native has put out hit after hit and has never disappointed. I must say that I had lost a great deal of respect for West after he interrupted Taylor Swift at the MTV VMA Awards in 2009. It was out of line and uncalled for, but since then he has let his music do all of the talking for him.

Let us look back at a a couple of his most memorable moments:

Though Kanye seems to have a tough, brash persona, his music is actually deep, sympathetic, empathetic, and very meaningful. In his latest song he portrays his mother in the third voice speaking down to Kanye and his daughter, North.

Click here for a previous release his newest song “Only One” featuring Sir Paul McCartney.

Kanye West is my favorite rapper, because he is not like the rest. He does not reuse the same material verse after verse. I personally, do not care about how much money someone has, how many women they are sleeping with, how many cars they driving, or how much an outfit costs. He discusses political and social ideals that are truly not ignorant. Though his opinion may not be in the majority, he is at least willing to share his opinion. For that reason alone he should be respected. Even Kanye said that he was the abomination of Obama’s nation.

Typically, when I write about an artist’s Top 10 songs I select ten songs and leave it there, but Mr. West deserves two separate countdowns. One is for the work that he has done on his own, and the other for all of the collaborations that he has done.

Top 10 Kanye West songs:

10. Heard ‘Em Say

9. Stronger

8. All Falls Down

7. Jesus Walks

6. Flashing Lights

Legend Series Presents: Patti LaBelle Top 10

When you talk about love you have got to mention Patti LaBelle. This Philadelphia native has been making hits since was the lead singer of the group, Labelle. The biggest song the group had was “Lady Marmalade”. As a solo artist LaBelle has worked with Michael McDonald, Gladys Knight, and Ron Isley just to name a few.

She is an Oscar nominee, Grammy winner, and a recipient of multiple lifetime achievement awards. The newest member of the Legend Series is the diva, Patti LaBelle.

Country Music Star Darius Rucker receives honor

Darius Rucker has come a long way from singing his University of South Carolina friends. Rucker began singing as the lead vocalist of the band Hootie and the Blowfish in 1986. His deep, soulful voice lead the band to a couple of Grammy awards. Also, the band’s first album, Cracked Rear View, went 16X platinum. Hootie and the Blowfish had hits like, “Let Her Cry”, “Hold My Hand”, and “Only Wanna Be With You”. The band decided in 2008 to take a hiatus so that Rucker could pursue a solo career.

Rucker’s first album, Learn to Live, charted three number one hits. They were “Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It”, “Alright”, and “It Won’t Be like This For Long”. His second album didn’t fail. Actually, it was certified gold. But his third album, True Believers may have been his best one yet. It featured a remake of Bob Dylan’s “Wagon Wheel”. The song went 3X platinum, won a Grammy, and never ceases to get old.

He later went on to record a Christmas album, Home for the Holidays, which is in stores now.

This South Carolina Gamecock fan continues to break down barriers and make history.

  • 2nd African- American with a #1 country song
  • Only African- American to win the CMA New Artist of the Year
  • Became a Grand Ole Opry Member in 2012

It is honor give Darius Rucker this week’s Young Veteran award. Between you and me, I don’t think it’s possible for this artist to stop making great music.

These are the Top 10 Darius Rucker songs.

The Legend Series Presents: The George Strait Top 10

Can you imagine having sixty number one hit songs? George Strait definitely didn’t see that coming. That’s more than Madonna (55), Michael Jackson (43), Elvis (41), and The Beatles (36). He is one of the few people that will ever have as many #1’s equal to their age. In over thirty years in the music business Strait never had to change his style. This cowboy rode away after his final tour this year, but says that he will still put out new music. No matter how much other genres of music influence country music, the country enthusiasts will always want to hear true sounds of George Strait.

These are the Top 10 George Strait songs:

10. Ocean Front Property

9. The Cowboy Rides Away

8. Marina Del Ray

7. Cowboys Like Us

6. Give It All We Got Tonight

This is why he is a prime candidate to be featured as a Young Veteran.

Anthony Hamilton recently released his sixth studio album, Home for the Holidays. Artists like Gavin Degraw, Chaka Khan, and ZZ Ward all make appearances on the album.

This Grammy-winner continues to “Woo” audiences by putting the soul back into soulful music.
