The Suze Orman Show will forever

It has been a quick and exciting thirteen years, but like other great shows this one must come to an end. The Suze Orman Show has been my favorite finance education show in that time period. The tools that she has given the world will never go in vain.

When the show first premiered in 2002, I can honestly say I vaguely knew what a 401K was and that’s only because I heard my dad mention it from time to time. However, while watching the show I learned my ABC’s and 123’s in the financial sense. 403 (b), 529, and Roth IRA all immediately come to mind when I hear her name.

Like everyone else whenever I plan to make a pricy purchase I think to myself, “Can I afford it?” I have become so good at it while looking at her show I typically get four or five calls right on every episode.

I hopefully will be able to retire when I am 67-70 and I must maintain an eight-month emergency plan. Oh, I’ve also learned that that if my employer wants to generously match my retirement input do not stop them. Regardless, at the age of 25, I can now pick out the type of term insurance I need because I am so “young”.

In high school and in college I never learned about student loans. I can’t tell you how glad I was when I realized I didn’t file for a parent plus loan. Knowing that student loans are not dischargeable from bankruptcy has plagued my mind for years, but it makes me work harder to avoid the harsh penalties.

Currently, I’m car hunting and that Suzebug that sits on my shoulder continues to remind me that if I cannot pay for the vehicle in three years, I apparently can’t afford it and my decision has been DENIED.

Credit cards will not be coming this way anytime soon as it has been well documented that those charges can go through the roof.

Suze, girlfriend, do I really have to wait to see you until next fall? Are you kidding me?? I’m sure “Suze Orman’s Money Wars” will be another hit, but there can never be another Suze Orman Show!

Until next time, there is only one line that will remain with me in life and it is, “People first, then money, then things”. Suze you stay safe and we will see you next fall!

LBT’s “Girl Crush” proves country music is afraid of change.

Embed from Getty Images

It was just three days ago when I decided to the Little Big Town top 10 countdown. When I did it, I would have never thought that it would be released prior to the controversy over the song “Girl Crush”, which has led to the song being pulled off the air in certain radio markets.

Little Big Town Top 10 Countdown

Where does the controversy come from? Some are saying that the song is promoting a “gay agenda”, but if people would listen to the song they would clearly understand the lyrics.

A few quotes from the song:

I gotta girl crush, hate to admit it but/I gotta heart rush, ain’t slowin’ down/I got it real bad, want everything she has/That smile and the midnight laugh she’s givin’ you now.

I wanna taste her lips, yeah, ’cause they taste like you/I wanna drown myself in a bottle of her perfume/I want her long blonde hair, I want her magic touch/Yeah, ’cause maybe then, you’d want me just as much/I gotta girl crush, I gotta girl crush

I don’t get no sleep, I don’t get no peace/Thinkin’ about her under your bed sheets/The way that she’s whisperin’, the way that she’s pullin’ you in/Lord knows I’ve tried, I can’t get her off my mind

With those quotes, yes, the song may be promoting a “gay agenda”, but if you listen to the lyrics of the song it is about a woman that is jealous of her ex-boyfriend’s new lover.

Karen Fairchild, Little Big Town’s lead vocalist, told the Washington Post, “It’s a genius lyric, such a beautifully written song about jealousy, and it has nothing to do with a same-sex couple.”

So why were people so quick to dismiss the song? It is because country music and the people who listen to it are afraid of change of uncertainty. This is not the first time country music connoisseurs have called in to radio stations to get songs taken off the air.

Exhibit A: Dixie Chicks “Travelin’ Soldier”

Exhibit B: Loretta Lynn “A Pill” A song about birth control pills.

Miniskirts, hotpants and a few little fancy frills / Yeah I’m making up for all those years since I’ve got the pill.

Exhibit C: Kacey Musgraves “Follow Your Arrow” Country radio did not like the line “roll up a joint.”

But, what if “Girl Crush” did have a “gay agenda”? Would it make a difference?

In the country music world it seriously would. Why I don’t know. Country music is listened to in all parts of America, but specifically in conservative states.

Twelve states have not legalized same-sex marriage. Ten of those states have strong conservative values. Those states are Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, North Dakota, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, South Dakota, and Texas. The other two states that have not legalize the union are Michigan and Ohio. President Barack Obama carried both states in the 2012 general election.

The defense of people who oppose homosexuality are those who feel as though the Bible tells people that homosexuality is a sin. People commit the seven deadly sins everyday, and no one bats an eye. Remember that God made all of his children in his image, so unless you think that God contradicts himself on a regular basis can we stop having this debate. By the way, please notice that people who use the Bible defense are always those who are afraid of change. That defense didn’t work for slavery or women’s rights and it doesn’t work now. Let’s try to “love the neighbor” for once.

Think. Why would someone choose to be gay? Look at all of the different hassles that they go through. Would you want to get bullied for just being yourself? Would you feel happy that you can not marry your significant other? Would you not want to have children?

When I think of the issue I notice that I have many other issues I need to worry about instead of gay rights. Everyone deserves to be happy, why would you want to stop him or her from living a joyful life. You always want to be on the right side of history and on this subject there are ten states that are not.

Little Big Town Top 10

Oh, Little Big Town, how I love the harmonies that you all create. The way that their four voices blend together is magical. Pain Killer, their most recent album is by far their best. It’s their most adult album to date and two great singles, “Day Drinking” and “Girl Crush”, have headlined it.

Here they are performing “Girl Crush” at The Grand Ole Opry.

LBT has done a phenomenal job of staying competitive in a very tight space. There are so many other talented groups out there. Lady Antebellum, Zac Brown Band, Rascal Flatts, and The Band Perry are all incredible in their own special ways, but Little Big Town happens to stick out.

The song “Pontoon” still seems to be not only a summer hit but one year around. Before I knew it I was jamming to a song about a boat, and I must say I still enjoy it to this day.

I hope to see the newest Grand Ole Opry members sometime soon. Hopefully, it’ll be the next time they come to New Orleans or Baton Rouge for the Bayou Country Superfest.

Let’s head to a “Little White Church” and check out the top 10 Little Big Town songs:

10. Your Side of the Bed

9. Deep River Woman

8. Sober

7. Little White Church

6. Tornado

Let’s go motorboatin’ to the top 5.

Mad respect for Chris Borland

At the age of 24, San Francisco 49ers linebacker Chris Borland decided to call it a career on Monday because of safety issues.

“I feel largely the same, as sharp as I’ve ever been. For me, it’s wanting to be proactive,” Borland said. “I’m concerned that if you wait ’til you have symptoms, it’s too late. … There are a lot of unknowns. I can’t claim that X will happen. I just want to live a long, healthy life, and I don’t want to have any neurological diseases or die younger than I would otherwise.”- The former Wisconsin Badger said.

I’m sure this was not an easy decision for Borland to make. His career just began and he had already made an impact for the team in the absence of Patrick Willis, who also retired this offseason. What he is commendable. Not everyone is willing to walk away from a huge paycheck in the name of his or her health. He had over $1.8 million left on his contract for the final three years.

In fourteen games, Borland had 108 tackles and 2 interceptions.

Borland told ESPN’s Outside the Lines that he planned to return to school to obtain a degree in sports management.

Personally, I do not know if I could have done it so early in my career. Assuming my dream has always been to make it to the NFL, I would have spent my high school years and college years just to get a taste of my dream. Maybe living out the first contract would have been a better idea. However, if the heart is not in willing to be apart of the NFL why take a roster spot of someone who really wants to play.

Tiger not playing at Bay Hill

Tiger Woods announced on his website that he will not be playing in the Arnold Palmer Invitational in 2015.

I spoke to Arnold today and told him that I will not play in his tournament this year. I’m sorry I won’t be in Orlando next week, but I know it will be a really successful event.

I’ve put in a lot of time and work on my game and I’m making strides, but like I’ve said, I won’t return to the PGA TOUR until my game is tournament ready and I can compete at the highest level, Woods said.

Woods had won the tournament eight times.

It really comes as no surprise as he stated last month that he would be taking a break away from the sport.

Hopefully, he will return to play at the Masters. The event will take place April 9-12 in Augusta GA.

Who Dat Nation…Relax!

For the second year in a row, the New Orleans Saints face financial hardships and they are making the most of the situation.
It began with the release of players like running back Pierre Thomas and linebacker Curtis Lofton.

It did not stop there.

On Tuesday afternoon, rumors circulated that the Saints were actively shopping Drew Brees’ go-to-guy, tight end Jimmy Graham.

Literally five minutes later, the Seahawks popped up as a potential suitor for Graham. Within 15 minutes from the news initially breaking, Graham was set to take his talents to Seattle.

Obviously, the Who Dat Nation is taking the news hard. First it was the beloved running back Thomas, a crucial piece in the Super Bowl winning team of 2009.

Then it was Lofton, a tackling machine for the Saints defense.

Now, Graham, arguably the best player who has the most upside on the black and gold roster.

I am here to tell the Who Dat Nation to have no fear because once again, General Manager Mickey Loomis and Head Coach Sean Payton are doing what is best for business.

There is one word that I want folks to keep in mind, VALUE.

As stated before, the Saints are tight on salary cap space and they have loosened the bind by trimming down the roster.

I love good ole PT Cruiser (Thomas) just as much as the next Who Dat. He has without doubt been one of the best players in Saints history, a true team guy taking pay cuts when asked and always putting his best foot forward no matter what was asked of him. From the bottom of my heart as a fan, I say thank you to Thomas.

However, put the emotion aside and realize the Saints saved a hair shy of $2 million in cap space for 2015. Is it worth it to keep Thomas?

He was used primarily for screens, where he simply isn’t as much of a threat as he used to be.

Sorry my fellow fans, but the answer is no.

Lofton was another player who came at a hefty price and his production simply wasn’t worth it. Cutting the 28-year-old linebacker saved the Saints $7.25 million. I realize Lofton racked up close to 400 tackles in three seasons with New Orleans, but he is also notorious for missing tackles. While I like Lofton, I don’t like a middle linebacker making $7.25 million, unless your name is Luke Kuechly.

As stated earlier, I believe Graham was the best player on the Saints roster with tremendous upside. Normally, I would not want a team I like to trade their best player, but in this case, sell.

New Orleans shipped Graham along with a 4th round draft choice for pro bowl center Max Unger and a 1st Round draft pick.
The Saints offensive line was horrendous last year, especially in the interior line. Often times last year, the pocket would collapse not allowing Brees to step up and fire the ball downfield as we have seen in years past.

Before the offseason began, there were rumors that either guard Ben Grubbs or Jahri Evans would be cut while the other would renegotiate their contracts. Both are among the five highest paid players for the black and gold.

It seems like forever and a day ago that both Grubbs and Evans were near the top of the league as guards. Unger will be a key part in the Saints offensive line success moving forward as he could potentially help milk whatever is left in the tank of the two guards until their replacements are found.

With center being one of the biggest needs after losing Brian De La Puente to the Bears last offseason, the Saints have found a fantastic replacement.

What we are seeing with New Orleans offense is not a rebuild, but simply a restructure.
Shipping Graham, focusing on the interior line and re-siging Mark Ingram to a 4-year deal could mean the Saints are going to focus attention on a power run game.

As far as tight end is concerned, have no fear because the Saints still have a young pass catcher in Josh Hill and an excellent blocker and reliable target in Ben Watson who both fit the mold of a true tight end.

While everyone can complain about losing tangible playmakers that you see on every snap, the most important positions begin up front.

The two teams (Patriots and Seahawks) that competed in the Super Bowl last year made it because of one common trait. Both teams control the line of scrimmage.

The Dallas Cowboys are another team that sticks out because they have been slowly building up the offensive line, which led them to a 12-4 season and a solid playoff run last year.

DeMarco Murray had the best season for a running back in Cowboys history and an aging Tony Romo had the best season of his career as well all thanks to a stellar offensive line, period.

Do I think the Saints will win the Super Bowl next year? No. That belongs to Seattle because that roster is still loaded and they have a solid back up at center named Patrick Lewis who hails from Metairie, Louisiana.

Adding Jimmy Graham gives them a go-to-guy that Russell Wilson has been missing desperately.

As for the Saints, this move will help them in the long term. Hopefully they will make some wise choices with the additional draft pick.

In the meantime, fingers crossed that the Saints can land either Tramon Williams or Brandon Browner in free agency.

From one Saints to another, relax. This is a business.

For a regime (Sean Payton and Mickey Loomis) who has a reputation of winning, 7-9 will not sit well with them.

Should the club throw be glorified?

Embed from Getty Images

For the past 24 hours I have seen the media glorify the three-iron that Rory McIlroy propelled on Friday. I must say that it was a heck of a throw, but should this throw be celebrated.

If Tiger “bleeping” Woods would chuck any club any where on the course he would be chastised and told about why clubs should not be thrown.

Yes, it is true the world hates Tiger. I do not, but most people do. We need to be fair across the board and criticize all players equally.
