Peter Oosterhuis diagnosed with Alzheimer’s

It was sad to hear that one of my favorite golf broadcasters now has early onset Alzheimer’s disease.

The reason I liked the Oosterhuis, Nick Faldo, and David Feherty style of broadcasting is because for some reason internationals make golf sound more interesting. Do they know more? That’ s debatable. Peter would be on the course describing the ball position and all other scenerios like no other.

“I feel it is the right time to step away to focus on things in life that I have always wanted to do.” Oosterhuis said when he retired in January.

I wish he and his family the best of luck as his story yet to be finished. Keep fighting Peter!

Spieth -14 thru 36

Jordan Spieth may very well be in route to his first major championship as he leads The Masters.

While players are still on course it is nearly impossible for anyone to catch his two round score.

This is the lowest 36-hole score breaking Raymond Floyd’s 13-under in 1976.

As of 3:15 PM est. Spieth was four shots ahead of second place Charley Hoffman.

The largest 36-hole lead is five. Floyd, Jack Nicklaus, and Herman Keiser all accomplished the feat.

Tiger not playing at Bay Hill

Tiger Woods announced on his website that he will not be playing in the Arnold Palmer Invitational in 2015.

I spoke to Arnold today and told him that I will not play in his tournament this year. I’m sorry I won’t be in Orlando next week, but I know it will be a really successful event.

I’ve put in a lot of time and work on my game and I’m making strides, but like I’ve said, I won’t return to the PGA TOUR until my game is tournament ready and I can compete at the highest level, Woods said.

Woods had won the tournament eight times.

It really comes as no surprise as he stated last month that he would be taking a break away from the sport.

Hopefully, he will return to play at the Masters. The event will take place April 9-12 in Augusta GA.

Should the club throw be glorified?

Embed from Getty Images

For the past 24 hours I have seen the media glorify the three-iron that Rory McIlroy propelled on Friday. I must say that it was a heck of a throw, but should this throw be celebrated.

If Tiger “bleeping” Woods would chuck any club any where on the course he would be chastised and told about why clubs should not be thrown.

Yes, it is true the world hates Tiger. I do not, but most people do. We need to be fair across the board and criticize all players equally.

“Charlotte is a major hub of business in the Southeastern United States with a growing economy and broad base of sports fans, and the Presidents Cup matches perfectly as we look to bring it to exciting, emerging markets and allow a new fan base to experience the competition, pageantry and international goodwill that the event represents.” US PGA Tour commissioner Tim FInchem said.

The course has been home of the Wells Fargo Championship since 2003.

The U.S. holds an 8-1-1 advantage in the event.

Tiger out indefinitely

Tiger Woods just announced on his website that he will be out indefinitely because he needs “a lot of work on my game.”

Click here for a preview of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro AM.

“Right now, I need a lot of work on my game, and to still spend time with the people that are important to me,” he said. “My play, and scores, are not acceptable for tournament golf. Like I’ve said, I enter a tournament to compete at the highest level, and when I think I’m ready, I’ll be back,” Woods said.

Tiger is now ranked 62nd in the world. This is his lowest ranking since coming on tour in 1996. He will surely fall even farther on the Official World Golf Rankings as long as he is out, The Masters is in eight weeks, so the chances of him playing there are quite bleak.

He went on to add that the injury he suffered last week at the Farmers Insurance Open had nothing to do with he deciding to take a break.

The first African- American PGA Tour member, Charlie Sifford, died Tuesday night.

He was known as the Jackie Robinson of golf because he was a pioneer for blacks who wanted to play golf. Because he was not allowed to play on the tour, he and other African- Americans organized their own tournaments.

In 1961, he became a member of the tour. The only two wins he has came at the Greater Hartford Open Invitational in 1967 and the Los Angeles Open in 1969. The Suntree Classic and the PGA Seniors’ Championship were the only wins Sifford had on the Champions Tour.

He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2004 and awarded him the 2014 Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Tiger Flops (not the golf swing)

Embed from Getty Images

The first round of the Waste Management Phoenix Open got underway today and Tiger Woods, well he disappointed. Arguably, he is the greatest player from around the green and he proved that was a myth in the opening round.

“I’m just having a hard time finding the bottom. Because of my old pattern, I was so steep on it, that I have a new grind on my wedge and sometimes it’s hard to trust. This is a similar grind I used to use back in the early 2000s, but it’s a different grind. Some of my shots were into the grain with tight pins, and either I flop it or bump it, one of the two. I chose to bump it,” Woods said post round.

Through the first four holes he was +4. He was able to calm down and get into the tournament. On the 13th Woods was able to get his first eagle since the 2013 Firestone Invitational. He finished at 2-over for the day.

His playing partners didn’t play much better. Jordan Spieth finished at -1 and Patrick Reed concluded at even.

If you don’t know who else is in the field you can view the Waste Management Phoenix Open preview here.

Also, Darius Rucker will be performing at the Birds Nest tonight. You can view his top 10 songs countdown here as well.

Sang Moon Bae off the Tour?

Sang Moon Bae may have to return to return to his home country of South Korea to join the military.

Reports are saying that the golfer has been denied an extension of his oversees travel permit.

What’s the big hoopla? In South Korea all men that that are physically- able between 18-35 must serve in the military for at least two years. Bae, a permanent U.S. resident, by rule needed to needed to have lived in America for at least a year to have his travel permit extended a possible additional three years.

South Korea’s Military Manpower Administration may revoke an overseas travel permit and force military duties on those who have spent a total of six months or more within the past year, or spent three consecutive months within the past year inside of Korea. Bae, however, has not spent three consecutive months in said country. He has traveled to his homeland for a total of 133 nonconsecutive days to enroll in graduate school and to play in Korean PGA Tour events.

From the Yonhap News Agency

“According to the relevant South Korean laws, conscription candidates who have acquired permanent overseas residency and have lived for at least one year in that country may have their overseas travel permit extended for up to three years.

However, the [Military Manpower Administration] may cancel overseas travel permit and impose military duties on those who have spent a total of six months or more within the past year, or spent three consecutive months within the past year, in South Korea.

In the past 12 months, Bae spent 133 days in total, but not consecutively, in South Korea to play Korea PGA Tour events and to handle paperwork to enroll at a graduate school.

According to Jipyong, a Seoul-based law firm representing Bae, the golfer’s period of stay in South Korea was within legal limit, but the MMA still considered it long enough so it didn’t regard him as an overseas resident.”

The 28-year-old has already won the Frys.com Open to begin the 2014-2015 season and has already qualified for a chance to win the Masters in April.

A representative for the firm defending the golfer said, “Bae has spent some time in South Korea recently but his occupation as a touring professional golfer must be taken into account. He should still be considered an overseas resident who has spent a year or more in the United States after getting his residency. It’s up to Bae to take legal action as his last resort.”
