It was just three days ago when I decided to the Little Big Town top 10 countdown. When I did it, I would have never thought that it would be released prior to the controversy over the song “Girl Crush”, which has led to the song being pulled off the air in certain radio markets.
Little Big Town Top 10 Countdown
Where does the controversy come from? Some are saying that the song is promoting a “gay agenda”, but if people would listen to the song they would clearly understand the lyrics.
A few quotes from the song:
I gotta girl crush, hate to admit it but/I gotta heart rush, ain’t slowin’ down/I got it real bad, want everything she has/That smile and the midnight laugh she’s givin’ you now.
I wanna taste her lips, yeah, ’cause they taste like you/I wanna drown myself in a bottle of her perfume/I want her long blonde hair, I want her magic touch/Yeah, ’cause maybe then, you’d want me just as much/I gotta girl crush, I gotta girl crush
I don’t get no sleep, I don’t get no peace/Thinkin’ about her under your bed sheets/The way that she’s whisperin’, the way that she’s pullin’ you in/Lord knows I’ve tried, I can’t get her off my mind
With those quotes, yes, the song may be promoting a “gay agenda”, but if you listen to the lyrics of the song it is about a woman that is jealous of her ex-boyfriend’s new lover.
Karen Fairchild, Little Big Town’s lead vocalist, told the Washington Post, “It’s a genius lyric, such a beautifully written song about jealousy, and it has nothing to do with a same-sex couple.”
So why were people so quick to dismiss the song? It is because country music and the people who listen to it are afraid of change of uncertainty. This is not the first time country music connoisseurs have called in to radio stations to get songs taken off the air.
Exhibit A: Dixie Chicks “Travelin’ Soldier”
Exhibit B: Loretta Lynn “A Pill” A song about birth control pills.
“Miniskirts, hotpants and a few little fancy frills / Yeah I’m making up for all those years since I’ve got the pill.”
Exhibit C: Kacey Musgraves “Follow Your Arrow” Country radio did not like the line “roll up a joint.”
But, what if “Girl Crush” did have a “gay agenda”? Would it make a difference?
In the country music world it seriously would. Why I don’t know. Country music is listened to in all parts of America, but specifically in conservative states.
Twelve states have not legalized same-sex marriage. Ten of those states have strong conservative values. Those states are Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, North Dakota, Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi, South Dakota, and Texas. The other two states that have not legalize the union are Michigan and Ohio. President Barack Obama carried both states in the 2012 general election.
The defense of people who oppose homosexuality are those who feel as though the Bible tells people that homosexuality is a sin. People commit the seven deadly sins everyday, and no one bats an eye. Remember that God made all of his children in his image, so unless you think that God contradicts himself on a regular basis can we stop having this debate. By the way, please notice that people who use the Bible defense are always those who are afraid of change. That defense didn’t work for slavery or women’s rights and it doesn’t work now. Let’s try to “love the neighbor” for once.
Think. Why would someone choose to be gay? Look at all of the different hassles that they go through. Would you want to get bullied for just being yourself? Would you feel happy that you can not marry your significant other? Would you not want to have children?
When I think of the issue I notice that I have many other issues I need to worry about instead of gay rights. Everyone deserves to be happy, why would you want to stop him or her from living a joyful life. You always want to be on the right side of history and on this subject there are ten states that are not.
